03 Nov CARPENTER (Manpower pooling only)
Basic Function: To undertake a variety of carpentry work, including constructing or repairing woodwork in an assigned location. It includes fabricating boxes for materials/parts, wood-plating rear box for pick-ups, repairing doors, windows, partitions, ceiling, floor, and walls of premises.
Work Performed:
a) Replaces wooden floor on heavy-duty trucks beds, taking measurements and cutting materials to required size using measuring tools and hand or machine tools provided and ensuring snug fit.
b) Fabricates boxes for materials/tools/parts etc, to be used in despatching items to/from rigs. Takes measurements, obtains materials and constructs to required measurements and or shape.
c) Constructs and installs wooden rear box for pick-ups for delivery items/materials required in various locations/rigs. Ensures that fitting is undertaken in a secure manner so that transportation of such items can be undertaken safely.
d) Receives requests for the construction of such as cupboards, cabinets, and shelving for storage of tools equipment and spare parts. Ensures that the construction is secure, adding locks when required and uses hand and power tools to install
e) Undertakes carpentry work on the rigs such as repairing windows, doors, ceilings, floors, stairs, cupboards, shelves, moving partitions and the like. Uses measuring tools to establish measurements and hand tools to repair items. Fabricates furniture and fittings, taking measurements and assessing material requirements. Ensures that the work is completed in a satisfactory manner and that the work area is left in a clean and safe condition.
f) Performs related duties as assigned, such as attending work areas where a problem has been reported or where work is to be undertaken, ordering materials and such consumables as tacks, glue and other materials.
Accountability:
The position is accountable for:
a) Undertaking carpentry and associated work at an assigned location.
b) Taking care to make sure all measurements are accurate
c) Interpreting diagrams and drawings
d) Ensuring that the work area is left in a clean, safe and orderly condition.

c) Wearing protective clothing and using the appropriate protection equipment when necessary

f) The safety and health of other persons which may be affected by their actions or omissions
g) Switching off lights/electrical equipment upon departure from the work area
h) Avoidance of tripping hazards by requesting correct routing of cables and the like
i) The correct usage of associated equipment
j) Practicing good housekeeping
k) Practicing the use of safety belts in company cars
l) Minimizing fire and health hazards associated with tobacco smoking.
Work Contacts : Regular contacts with immediate job associates to obtain details of work requirements and to receive instructions from supervisors.
Independence of Operation : Works in accordance with established procedures and specialised technical standards. Completed work is spot-checked by supervisor.
Physical Effort : Physical effort, involving the movement and use of medium weight carpentry equipment, related tools and materials is necessary for approximately 90% of the work period.
Work Environment : Approximately 90% exposure to prevailing weather conditions, heat, humidity and dirt for the majority of the work period.
Minimum Requirements :
a) Satisfactory completion of a Secondary (12 years) education.
b) 5 years experience in all types of carpentry work.
c) Fair knowledge of English in order to understand requirements.
